Popularly known as the "Witches' Tower", it is the former Niedertor, which opens the east side of the first enclosure (1216) towards Strasbourg. The upper floors were used as a prison, especially in the 17th century for "witches" before their execution.

The witch tower corresponds to the old Niedertor (low gate) of the first enclosure (1216-1230). It is said to have been renovated in the late 13th and late 14th centuries. The current state is very different from the original appearance. The upper floors served mainly in the 17th century as a prison for 'witches' before they were executed. In 1774 the ground floor housed a saltpeter and an equipment depot for the fortifications.triggered?
