The millstone dates back to 1917 and was located in the historic water mill in Birgel until he "retired" (TIP: make sure to visit it too!!!). It is a champagne stone and comes from the Champagne region in France that gave it its name.
Such millstones were not previously cast in one piece, but as you can see here, they were delivered in individual pieces and then assembled on site. They were glued with mortar.
In 2014, the historic Birgel water mill exchanged this stone for a local basalt stone for reasons of age, which is now used to grind the grain in the Birgel mill.
