Old University
Wilhelmine main building of the University of Strasbourg on University Square, built 1879–1884
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe monument
The sculpture dates from 1904 and was created by Ernst Waegener. From April 1770 to August 1771, Goethe spent three semesters at the University of Strasbourg to study law. He enjoyed the charm of the mild Alsatian landscape and was impressed by the magnificent Strasbourg cathedral. Herder recognized Goethe's talent in Strasbourg and inspired him with folk and natural poetry, with Homer and Ossian. The Strasbourg period was also characterized by his love for Friederike Brion (1752 to 1813). For Goethe, his stay in Strasbourg meant spiritual and physical rebirth.
