It honors the reformer and Peasants' War leader and was erected in 1989 to commemorate his 500th birthday.

The memorial on the market square was created by the artist Klaus Messerschmidt for Thomas Müntzer's 500th birthday in 1989. The four corner columns are casts of the columns with carved figures of saints that survived the fire in Müntzer's birthplace in 1851. The front figure shows Müntzer himself with his back bare, which symbolically represents his vulnerability. With the masked figure, the artist wanted to represent parts of the old society that were closed to Müntzer's ideas.
