Mathilde von Schlayer, daughter of a state minister, had the fairytale building built in 1886-88. Shortly after completion, the builder left the brick building to the Stuttgart Deaconess House, which used the Schlayerburg as a convalescent home for sisters who were ordered to take a bath from 1891 onwards.
