In the 11th and 12th centuries, Hirsau was a very important German reform monastery of the Cluniac type. The three-nave basilica of St. Peter and Paul was one of the largest Romanesque churches in southwest Germany and a model for many other monastery churches before it was destroyed by French troops in 1692 during the Palatinate War of Succession.
