The first sequoias came to Europe in the mid-19th century shortly after their discovery in California. In 1856, the first sequoia was planted in the flower garden of the Oldenburg Palace Garden. Julius Bosse's successor Heinrich Ohrt had brought the tree from Potsdam. In their native California, sequoias can reach a height of up to 100 meters, in Europe they do not grow taller than 50 meters. The oldest specimens are estimated to be up to 3900 years old. The fibrous, spongy bark of older trees is very thick (about 30 to 75 centimeters), soft and resin-free and protects the tree from forest fires.
