History of the districtThe St. Nicholas Church gave this district its name. It was the oldest church in Oldenburg (first mentioned in 1237). In 1872 it was demolished because it was in disrepair. When the Nikolaiviertel was repaved, the foundations of the church were rediscovered and the location is now marked in the paving.Where the Lambertihof is today, Oldenburg's market hall used to be.The Bergstrasse is probably the most romantic and most photographed street in Oldenburg. It also leads up to the highest point of the pedestrian zone, an impressive 7.30 meters above sea level. In earlier times, many craft businesses were located here. The Nikolaigang as a passage to Gaststrasse was only created much later in the 1970s.

NikolaiviertelThe old city quarter "Nikolaiviertel" forms a relaxed counterpoint to the pedestrian zone. Many small and fine shops have settled on the cobblestone streets, probably the oldest in the city. Here you can feel peace and serenity with a special offer - from glasses, high-quality fashion, jewelry, fair trade and beautiful things for the house and garden to a cozy café. The streets "Kleine Kirchenstraße", "Bergstraße", "Nikolaigang" and the Lambertihof make up the Nikolaiviertel.
