Oldenburg Castle

Very nice castle and in recent years also really well maintained.

The interiorsThe late classicist oval reception room at the current museum entrance and the Idyll Room with all 43 paintings of the Idyll Cycle by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, the court painter of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig, are considered outstanding. Even if not all of the historical furnishings have survived the years, rooms like these convey the splendor and beauty in which the rulers of Oldenburg once lived.

ExhibitionsThe museum also shows changing exhibitions and has two other locations: the Augusteum houses the Old Masters Gallery, and the Prinzenpalais houses the New Masters Gallery with paintings from the 19th century onwards.The palace gardens, which Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig had laid out as an English-style landscape garden at the beginning of the 19th century, are inseparably linked to the palace. Old solitary trees, watercourses, flowerbeds and historic buildings such as the tea pavilion and the court gardener's house still characterize the landscape today.
