The Royal Chapel was completed at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, in 1710. It is the fifth – and last – of the chapels which have succeeded one another in the castle since Louis XIII. Jules Hardouin-Mansart proposed the plan to the King in 1699. The first architect died in 1708 without seeing the end of the work which was completed by his brother-in-law Robert De Cotte.
