The church of Vierlingsbeek is of very ancient origin and is the mother church of Overloon, Holthees and Groeningen. In the late Middle Ages she belonged to the St. George chapter at Grave Castle. The fact that the church is dedicated to one of Rome's most important martyrs also indicates the great age of the parish. St. Willibrord dedicated his monastery in Echternacht to, among others, St. Lawrence. The first church in Vierlingsbeek was probably made of wood, as usual.
