Via the weir at Lavours you reach the northern tip of the actually artificial island “Île Tournier”. This was created when a canal for shipping traffic was created in addition to the natural course of the Rhone. As a consequence, the current flow of the so-called “vieux Rhône” (the old Rhone) is only around five to ten percent of the original amount of water.
