Natuurpunt and the Tiense sugar refinery are building sustainable management in this region. Three old basins were converted into ponds with marsh vegetation to attract breeding and reed birds. Blue-footed grebes, small reed warblers, reed buntings, eared grebes and even the protected marsh harrier breed there. The mudflats are also a magnet for migratory birds. The nature reserve is located in a wide reed ditch. Many insects, dragonflies, bluethroats and rare water shrews also live here. The soil is rich in lime and you can see that in the vegetation of sea-green sedge and common sedge that characterise the area. Earth clover and flat rush also grow here. This section is part of the Grote GeteVallei.
