Beautiful forest. Actually, it is two forests.

"The Heibos is located in Kortenaken (Hoeleden) along the upper reaches of the Paardenbeek, which has carved out a small valley here. The area consists of two large forests connected by a central meadow. Around the core area are mainly fields, meadows and a few smaller field forests. About half of the area consists of forest."

On the Ferraris map (1771-1778) we see the mention Heydenbosch. The trees are relatively young because they have already been felled. The pedunculate oaks, for example, are about 70 years old. Here and there there are some centenarians. According to some experts, the Heibos is even a remnant of the so-called “Coal Forest” from the time of the Romans. Not that the name refers to the fact that cabbages grew in the forest, but this wood was used for the production of charcoal. Charcoal produces higher temperatures than ordinary firewood, which is indispensable when forging iron. Half of the Heibos consists of forest, the rest mainly consists of grasslands.
