THE ULRICH FOUNTAIN
The Ulrichsbrunnen belongs to the Ulrichsweiher. It commemorates Saint Ulrich (890-973), Bishop of Augsburg from 923 and the seventh abbot in the Ottobeuren monastery. As a tireless wanderer in his diocese, he combined pastoral care with caring for the poor. The legend tells that Ulrich, who was terribly thirsty, once begged God for fresh water and soon a spring gushed forth from which healing water gushed. The wayside shrine above the Ottobeur fountain, which was probably built in 1706 with the Ulrichsweiher, picks up on the tradition of Ulrichsbrunnen and springs, which was then widespread in the Middle Ages. The wooden figure of Bishop Ulrich with staff and miter behind a lattice was created by the Ottobeur monastery brother and woodcarver Felizian Lutz OSB
