    Hiking

In contrast to the craggy grandeur of Helvellyn and its subsidiary peaks, the Dodds are gentle rounded fells. However, their great height gives them superb views across the Lake District, even if there are no dramatic precipices to gaze down.

Stybarrow Dodd is the most southerly of the Dodds and can be ascended from Thirlmere and Ullswater via Sticks Pass, the high col to the south. From the pass, it is only a short (if strenuous) walk up neighbouring Raise.

From up here you can see except the already named mountain peaks Thirlmere, a dam in the valley of St John's Beck and very close to the larger town of Keswick. Also up here, the SW West wants to be very strong.

Wainwright no 4 of the day having come across from Clough Head. There are fine views from this one. Next down to Sticks Pass and onwards to High Rigg.
