The lower Prießnitztal used to be a wetland with small ponds on the valley floor. In the course of the water storage construction and the drinking water source tapping, the character of the area was changed by embankments.

The first pond in the wetland biotope was created in 1990 and is a spawning water for common toads, brown frogs and newts. These animals come to lay their eggs in spring and then leave the water again. Frogs and grass snakes have also arrived. A scientific study identified 25 species of dragonflies. There are 35 in the entire Danube floodplains. This diversity documents the outstanding effect of the biotope.

In 2011, another part of the biotope complex was realized: a shallow pond fed by rainwater. For this purpose, the original channel was recreated with a clay seal. Here too, a species spectrum emerged very quickly that corresponds to a wet biotope on the edge of the forest.
