Built to aid shipping in the 1860's, it's unusual in that it remained unpainted and is a plain brick tower. This was one of the last lighthouses to be automated in 1998. There is also a modern GPS base station on the site.

Impressive lighthouse on the edge of the Isle of Lewis. We had our picnic on a rock right beside the lighthouse. Could be worse 😉

Although there is no access to the lighthouse itself, this is a fantastic spot to watch the ocean.
A walk around the Butt of Lewis (which claims to be the windiest place in Britain) can take in the lighthouse and a delightful little beach close by.
