After the fire in 1174, the choir was rebuilt in the Gothic style. It is considered the first Gothic building in England and, along with Lausanne Cathedral, was one of the first Gothic buildings outside of France.

The monk and chronicler Gervasius reports that a committee of church people met and called together various builders, but they were unable to agree on a building proposal. Finally, the Frenchman William von Sens was chosen. He brought influences from early French Gothic (including the cathedrals of Sens and Saint-Denis) into his work. However, he did not finish the construction (for which parts of the old choir, which had been ruined by the fire, had to be demolished). In 1178 he fell from scaffolding and was seriously injured. For some time he directed the construction work from his sickbed until he finally returned to France, where he died in 1180. William's successor was a local man of the same name, who was called William the Englishman. Under him, the renovation of the choir was completed, to the east end of which the Trinity Chapel including the ambulatory was added, and to it the “crown” (“The Corona” or “Beckett's Cown”) was added as an axial = apex chapel. These rooms conclude with round floor plans, typical of the French early Gothic up to 1180.
