30 years ago, Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui was still a small, dreamy place with a beautiful, almost lonely beach. Today you can find hundreds of shops, restaurants, tailors, jewellers, etc. on the main road that runs parallel to the beach and is separated by bungalow complexes. Chaweng is the center of Samui and can be considered the main beach.
However, this did not detract from the fine white sandy beach. There are still no high-rise buildings or high-rise hotels to be seen from the water, only the contrast of the turquoise water, the white sand and the bungalow complexes sinking into the palm green.
The more than 5 km long beach is divided into several sections:
Quite busy in the north and behind an offshore reef the water is completely calm, but the reef, which can hardly be crossed, is only fun for families with small children. The water depth here hardly exceeds 80cm. A bit of swimming is only possible at high tide, but you can play and splash around to your heart's content in the particularly warm water.
The busiest section is in the middle of the Chaweng and anyone looking for sporting challenges such as sailing, water or jet skiing, banana riding or similar will experience paradise here. This is also where most people are and it is less suitable for those seeking peace and quiet than for friends of action and seeing & being seen. Dealers, flying and stationary take care of everything you need - or not.
The most beautiful section for me is the southern part of the main beach, because there are few visitors here, noise or other disturbing factors hardly occur and you can find your own 200m. The sand here is very light and fine and children can splash about safely in the front part of the beach, as the beach only drops off steeply after about 20m... but of course you still have to be careful. You can get food here directly in the restaurants of the hotels, ice-cold drinks, fruit and small things are delivered by hawkers.
Chaweng Beach is the longest and busiest beach on Koh Samui. There is everything here that makes a tourist's heart beat faster - except perhaps peace and quiet.
