The Sexten Rotwand is also known as the Zehnerkofel or simply the Zehner – a name derived from its special position within the so-called Sexten Sundial. This natural sundial consists of several prominent Dolomite peaks that, viewed from a specific point in Sexten, indicate the position of the sun at any given time of day. Each peak symbolizes an hour between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. For example, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the sun is directly above the 2,965-meter-high Sexten Rotwand, which is why this peak is called the Zehnerkofel. Other peaks on the sundial are the Neunerkofel, Elferkofel, Zwölferkofel, and Einserkofel.
