The St. Sixtus Church in Haltern am See is an important church with a rich history. It was built in Romanesque style and is the oldest surviving building in the city. The origins of the church date back to the 9th century and it has been remodeled and enlarged several times over the centuries.

This church is the main church in Haltern and is located directly on the market square in the city center.
It was completed in 1877 according to plans by August Hanemann.

During the new building in 1874 - 77, the medieval church with its Romanesque tower from the time before the city was founded had to be removed. August Hanemann planned the church in the North German brick Gothic style, with an 80 m high tower.

The previous late Gothic church with the Romanesque tower, which characterizes old city views, was not only too small because the population had doubled from 1750 to 1851 (to 3,645).

In 1749, news of a miracle caused by the cross in St. Sixtus first spread like wildfire. People made pilgrimages there in droves. This is primarily why the church was built to its current size in 1874.
It was the decade in which the Cologne Cathedral was completed, which also had a certain impact.
The Gothic branch cross and the Flemish carved altar are worth seeing.

A beautiful church right on the market square. Here you will find nice cafes and ice cream parlors
