Icebergs are not made of frozen seawater. Their life begins when snow falls on the continental ice sheet, becomes a glacier and slowly drifts towards the sea.

When the ice hits the sea, it breaks off in massive chunks, a process called calving. Smaller tsunamis often occur when powerful new icebergs fall into the sea.

Its surface melts when exposed to sunlight. The shape changes and with it the balance, so that the mountain slowly rotates on its own axis. Icebergs can be several kilometers wide and can take years to melt.

An iceberg appears much smaller than it actually is. Less than ten percent of its mass is visible at the water's surface.
