The Aa is a stream and, downstream, a smaller river in the east of the Dutch province of North Brabant. The canalized stream rises near Nederweert in Limburg and joins the Zuid-Willemsvaart and the Dommel at the Citadel in the center of 's-Hertogenbosch. There, the Aa and Dommel form the Dieze, which flows into the Meuse just north of 's-Hertogenbosch. The stream, whose name means "water," was canalized in the 1930s. Land consolidation in the 1960s has significantly altered the old cultural landscape in the Aa valley. Since 1993, the Aa no longer forms a hydrological whole; its upper reaches have been a short tributary of the Zuid-Willemsvaart, and its 46 km-long lower reaches a parallel course of the canal. At the border of Asten and Helmond it meets the Astense Aa, which comes from the Hoekse Kuilen, located in the southeast of North Brabant near the border of Meijel (Limburg)
