From the 12th century, Wieliczka was home to the largest salt mine in Europe. This wealth had to be defended and managed. The Żupny Castle is therefore a historically important castle, which is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You can visit the small museum in the castle (admission 20 zl, as of August 2023), but unfortunately not the inner courtyard of the castle, because extensive work is being carried out there.
