Place du Bouffay was the main square of Nantes in the Middle Ages, but the buildings surrounding it date from the 18th and 19th centuries. It overlooked the Loire, until the river was filled in between the wars.
Today it is a vast pedestrian area, with numerous bars and restaurants.
