The demolition of the fortifications at the end of the sixties of the nineteenth century gave Charleroi a lot of space. The municipal government decided in 1867 to construct several parks, but only the Queen Astrid Park has actually been realised. The park was inaugurated in 1882. On this occasion, the electric street lighting installed in Charleroi by Julien Dulait was turned on for the first time. The park was designed by city architect Auguste Cador and landscape architect J. Duquesne. Both architects were inspired by English parks. In the middle of the park is a music kiosk. This one was built in 1882; burned down during World War I and was rebuilt in 1920. Near the kiosk is a memorial to the Rwandan Genocide.
