The fascinating remains of Arezzo's Roman amphitheater, built in the 2nd century AD, likely under Emperor Hadrian, reveal the city's time as an important center of the Empire. The arena could accommodate up to 9,000 spectators for public shows and games.
In the Middle Ages, part of the structure was incorporated into the Monastery of San Bernardo, now home to the Archaeological Museum. Even today, arches and curves of the ancient arena can be recognized: fragments of Rome that have stood for nearly two thousand years.
