From Porta San Clemente, the northern entrance to the walls of Arezzo, the main road from the city towards Casentino and Romagna began in the Middle Ages, but archaeological finds from the past tell us that the road is much older and sinks the its origins at least in Roman times. The entrance takes its name from an early medieval church, which in 1031 was donated by Bishop Teodaldo to the Benedictines of Santa Maria di Prataglia, who founded their abbey there. Around the middle of the following century the monks accepted the Camaldolese rule.

In that period Arezzo expanded again and the development imposed the execution of a new wall, built at the end of the XII century. Porta San Clemente was built between today's via Garibaldi and the "Vittorio Fossombroni" retirement home, incorporating into the city a suburb called "Fondaccio" and the female monastery of San Benedetto, which had already been active for some decades. The Camaldolese complex of San Clemente instead continued to remain outside the walls.
