    The Porta Praetoria in Regensburg
The Romans once founded Regensburg and one of their legacies is the oldest building in Regensburg: the Porta Praetoria.
It was once the sally gate of the legionnaires' camp and faces north - towards their enemies. The camp was completed in 179 under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Despite its extensive destruction, the gate, with its mighty blocks, still gives an impression of how strongly fortified this camp once was.
The gate was apparently still in use until 932 and was known as porta aquarum. With the construction of the Stone Bridge in the 12th century and the associated restructuring of the city fortifications, the building lost its importance. It was built over and forgotten.
It was only discovered again in 1885 during demolition work on an old brewhouse. Today this Roman relic serves as the back door of a beer garden, where visitors regularly check the stability of the gate after drinking too much barley juice.

The ancient Romans. No matter what you say about them, their buildings are indestructible. Simply beautiful, functional structures.
