The first bridge was built at the narrowest point of the Rhine near Stein at the beginning of the 13th century, probably on the instructions of the abbot of the St. Georgen monastery. The wooden bridge was first mentioned in documents in 1267 and consisted of an open footbridge resting on around ten pole bays. Between 1972 and 1974 the current road bridge was built, which has two lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

Road cycling
From the Rheinbrucke at Stein am Rhein you have a great view of where the Rhine flows from the wide lake into the smaller mouth of the river. There are some wild streams and small islands in the middle. With the cute town of Stein am Rhein at the waterfront beside the river it is the perfect stop for a photo and it is impressive to see. Would recommend going past and see it for yourself!
