Originally a defensive tower, it was converted into a prison in the 13th century and later into a clock tower. Today it houses one of the oldest astronomical clocks in Switzerland and a carillon.

The Zytglogge is famous for its complicated clock, which not only shows the time but also depicts the movements of the sun, moon and stars. There are also playful figures that move at certain times.

The defense tower, which has been extended several times, was built between 1218 and 1220 as the western end of the main street of the city of Bern, founded in 1191. With each expansion of the city, which could only take place to the west due to the location of Bern's old town in the Aare loop, the tower moved further into the city center, lost its function as a defense tower and was then used for other purposes. Before the great city fire in 1405, it served as a prison. After that, it was rebuilt as a clock tower - Zytgloggeturm or Zytglogge for short - from Bernese sandstone. Its tower clock with striking mechanism showed the time that was binding for the entire city. The distance traveled was measured from the tower. In 1530, the cuboid tower received its towering shape and a new clock. The decrees and regulations are posted in the gate passage and, since the 18th century, the length measurements have been installed for public control. With the late Baroque renovations of 1770/71, it was completely integrated into its surroundings.

At the top of the hour, numerous people gather in front of the Zytglogge (time bell tower) and watch the unique spectacle that takes place in Bern's old town at that time. The puppet game with the bear train, the jester, the golden rooster and Chronos - the god of time - delights young and old from near and far.
