One of the most beautiful cenotaphs we know. Generously laid out and not hidden somewhere in the forest, but admonished at an exposed place, it invites again and again to a quiet memory.

Not the fallen soldiers are remembered here, but the 681 victims of the Athens and Thielbek catastrophe buried here.
Shortly before the end of WK II, British bombers attacked the former passenger steamer, which was not designated as a hospital ship, as it was suspected that it was a troop transport. However, concentration camp inmates from various camps had been penned on these ships. One guess is that they wanted to sink the ships on the open sea with the prisoners!
Approximately It should have been 8,000 dead by the attack! Survivors were z. T. shot in the Baltic Sea by Wehrmacht members and the Volkssturm.
Many dead drove in the entire Lübecker bay, z. T. even to the island of Poel.
There are many of these memorial sites on the Bay of Lübeck.
