The city of Schwedt on the Oder decided in July 2018 to announce a competition for an artistic design for a fountain. A total of 32 artists and 2 pairs of artists expressed their interest in participating in the competition. Of these, 14 participants submitted their draft ideas. A jury of artists from Schwedt, the chairman of the city council, the mayor and employees of the city administration of Schwedt / Oder viewed sketches of the ideas, then selected 3 sketches, which were refined by the artists and presented in person in February 2019.
After detailed discussion, the jury decided on the winning design by artist Jan Witte-Kropius.
The fountain shows a worker hanging out the tobacco to dry. The devil leans against one of the cube-shaped seats and brazenly smokes a pipe. Water will splash out of the 'little tobacco' area, encouraging children and adults to stay, especially in the warmer months.
