Every year on August 14th, the “Discesa dei Candelieri” is celebrated in honor of the Virgin who would have saved the city from the plague. The Candelieri are giant candlesticks that, since the Middle Ages, represent the Gremi, ie the city guilds of arts and crafts.
This festival consists of a costume procession, during which the representatives of each Gremio carry on their shoulders their own heavy "candlestick" (a large wooden column that symbolizes a candle). The procession starts in the center of the city and descends to the northern limit of the historic center, ending with a solemn mass when it reaches Santa Maria di Betlem.
This festival has been included by UNESCO among the World Heritage Sites in 2013.

Beautiful historic center and if you happen to be in the mid-August period you will surely come across the typical festival, the Descent of Candelieri which is held every year on August 14th.

Sassari is the second largest city in Sardinia. It was founded by the Phoenicians and has experienced various cultural influences over the centuries. This is reflected in the architecture and cultural heritage of the city. It is definitely worth a visit.
