Santa Maria di Betlem, the oldest church in Sassari, is dedicated to the Virgin.
Built in the thirteenth century in Romanesque style, it was then remodeled with Gothic and Neoclassical elements. It has a sandstone gabled façade with a fine rose window and a splayed portal in the middle. It is surmounted by an elliptical dome and an unusual round bell tower.
It houses seven giant candlesticks that, since the Middle Ages, represent the Gremis, ie the city guilds of arts and crafts.
Every year on August 14th, the “Discesa dei Candelieri” (“Descent of the Candlesticks") is celebrated in honor of the Virgin who would have saved the city from the plague.
