After the foundation of the United East India Company in 1602, which had one of its headquarters in Hoorn, Hoorn grew into a port city of international importance. When trade declined due to competition from Amsterdam and England, Hoorn remained a fishing port and market town of regional importance. Many of the old buildings have been preserved. Today a popular destination with many small shops, cafes and restaurants.

As the main square in Hoorn, the 'Roode Steen' is a place not to be missed. The centrally located square is the crossroads of several shopping streets leading to the city's ports. On the 'Roode Steen' you will also find the 'Westfries Museum' and the statue of 'Jan Pieterszoon Coen'. Literally translated as 'Red Stone', this place got its name from the many executions that took place in the square. Next to the statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, a large red stone is a silent witness to the past.
