The path leads directly past striking boulders. There was a long time ago basalt mined there - today a paradise for romping especially for children.

These chunks of basalt are an ancient Roman quarry.

Interesting for friends of archeology. The Mauerley was created when the Veitskopf volcano erupted 200,000 years ago. The exposed lava flow has served as a quarry since Roman times. The signs of degradation can still be seen today. E.g. Wedge pockets that were hammered into the boulders to jump out individual blocks of stone. In addition to millstones, building materials were also mined.
