Neo-Romanesque church on the Beemdstraat, with a detached campanile (tower), with a triangular pediment above the entrance. Built in the years 1953-54 and inaugurated in 1956. Architect Jozef Ritzen.

The church is dedicated to Saint Lutgart, born in Tongeren in 1182, died in the abbey of the Cistercian women in Aywier (Walloon Brabant) in 1246. She was constantly in ecstasy and performed miracles. Curiously, she kept refusing to learn French. That immediately became the reason why she was proclaimed patroness of the Flemish Movement. She is also the patroness of Tongeren and Flanders, of the blind, of language and literature, of pregnant women. Described in Latin almost immediately after her death and translated into Middle Dutch, probably before 1254. These volumes were rediscovered in Copenhagen in 1897

The St. Lutgardis Church in Tongeren consists of a narthex, a three-aisled nave with nine bays, and a virtually detached tower on the northeast side. It is conceived as an early Christian basilica. The building is constructed of marlstone and has a plinth of rusticated bluestone, round-arched fanlights, the narthex with a three-part round-arched arcade, and a marlstone relief depicting St. Lutgardis embracing the cross in the pediment above the portal. The building is covered by a gable roof, the aisles by lean-to roofs, and the tower has a tented roof. Between the nave and the aisles is a round-arched arcade supported by columns. The church has wooden ceilings inside.
