Schloss Bellinghoven offers young people between the ages of 18 and 28 with a mental illness a very special home: in a rural setting between Rees and Mehrhoog, they can live in group homes and find their way back into a self-determined life through offers for daily structure and employment.

Bellinghoven was built as an earth mound castle surrounded by a moat. The excavated earth was used for the castle hill, on which a defensive tower was built.
Little by little, the earth mound castle and tower were expanded to include permanent residential buildings. "Bellinghoven Castle" was built, a defensive structure to protect the surrounding land, which had originally been Xanten property.
The first documented mention is probably that of Gerardo de Bellenchove in 1206.
In 1325, a Diedrich von Bellinghoven completed the construction of the castle. In a document dated December 20, 1325, he then transferred the Bellinghoven house he had built to the Count of Cleves as an open house - it was open to him whenever he needed it. The Lord of Bellinghoven had thus secured the feudal lordship and feudal protection of the Count of Cleves and had given up his freedom as his own little "territorial lord". Diedrich's document is in the Düsseldorf State Archives. The seal shows three wall anchors. The actual family coat of arms, which apparently dates from a later period, shows three bells (barks) like those carried on the carter's horses' harnesses. Diedrich must have died around 1350.
In the following years, a "Johannes Ritter von Bellingchaven" was mentioned in several documents. In 1341, "Jordan von Bellingchaven" was mentioned.
On July 10, 1348, Johannes von Bellingchaven sold land in Haffenslo in the Rhenen court. On April 14, 1385, Johan van Bellingchaven and his wife offered the "Hof zu Mehr", which had belonged to Heinrich von Galen, to Count Adolf von Kleve for inheritance.
Due to debts, the Bellinghoven family sold the old farm to Wilhelm von Bernsau in 1481. In 1492, the castle and all other rights passed into the hands of the von Bernsaus family and were named the Lordship of Bellinghoven by the Xanten provost Johann Mont. The sellers, Johann von Bellinghoven and his wife Agnes, were buried in the collegiate church in Rees.

The castle belongs to the Caritas Association Oberhausen and offers help to young people with mental illness. There is a quiet rest area on the edge of the castle.
