The Roland of Gardelegen is a historic landmark of the town. Roland figures symbolize the town rights and independence of medieval towns. The first Roland statue in Gardelegen was documented in 1450 and also served as a meeting place in the event of a fire. The statue was damaged in a town fire in 1526 and replaced in 1564 with a new statue made of Elm limestone. After another fire in 1667, the statue was finally destroyed in 1727. In 2002, based on historical descriptions, a new Roland statue was erected from Ummendorf sandstone. This statue, which stands in front of the town hall, measures approximately 4.30 meters and also features a depiction of Till Eulenspiegel on the back, indicating the importance of beer brewing in the region.
