In 1543, Count Albrecht III of Hohenlohe had the round, single-storey defensive tower built to reinforce the city wall. In 1620, the master builder Georg Kern increased the round tower by three storeys on behalf of Count Kraft VII of Hohelohe-Neuenstein-Neuestein.
