The Neustädter Rathaus was built in 1367 at the northern end of Karlsplatz. It housed the official offices, the prison and later also representative rooms in the south wing facing Karlsplatz.

The construction of the New Town Hall began soon after the founding of the New Town by Charles IV in 1348. Over the centuries it has witnessed numerous historical events, most notably in 1419 when the first Prague defenestration occurred, marking the beginning of the Hussite movement was. Today, cultural and social events take place in the historic premises of the town hall. The almost 70 meter high Gothic tower offers a beautiful view of the New Town and Charles Square (Karlovo náměstí), which is the largest square in Prague.
