The area around the camp, with large parts of today's NSG approx. 27.7km2, was used as a military training area by the British until 1994 and marked on the map as a red restricted area. When it was handed over to the , a mong landscape was left behind over the entire area as a result of the intensive military exercise and was renatured with great effort by the population.
