In the ice age approx. 600,000 years ago huge glaciers pushed south from the Scandinavian mountains. The local landscape was covered by a 300 - 400 meter thick layer of ice. The ice masses brought with them huge masses of stone, sand and boulders. As the temperature increased, the ice melted and the rock debris sank to the ground. This is how the Nienburg-Meppener Geest came into being.

The eastern edge of this geest can be seen here. Meltwater that ran down to the Wesertal has washed deep channels into the Geestrand. A special feature of the landscape is the "Binner gorge", a dry valley sloping from the Geestrand to the Weser, which was created during the Ice Age. Extensive coniferous and deciduous forests invite you to take relaxing walks in attractive surroundings.

After the stretches through the plains, the path through the "Binner Gorge" is a surprise and the dirt road on the "GroĂźe Aue" also has atmosphere.
(The path through the gorge is passable if there are not huge fallen trees in the way. Then you have to carry your bike)
