The buildings around the market were built after the city fire in 1517 on their predecessors in Renaissance and Baroque style and form a unique architectural unity. In the Middle Ages, the multi-storey roof superstructures served as warehouses and remind of Naumburg's heyday as a trade fair city. Characteristic are the round-arched verges with late gothic glazing, which adorn several buildings on the market. Some of the townhouses have housed personalities who shaped German history: for example, Luther stayed in Building 3 on his drive to the Reichstag in Worms. On the façade of the so-called Kayserschen house, market 10, which stands out by its magnificent oak wood gate, a panel reminds of the stay of the emperor Karl V. in the year 1547 in this house.
