A water treatment plant was built on the Mže before the dam was built. The dam was built between 1970 and 1975, during which the village of Lučina (Sorghof) to the south of the future reservoir was removed. The dam serves primarily as a drinking water reservoir for the regions around Tachov, Bor and Planá as well as Stříbro and Kladruby. Its water is also used as service water for industry and agriculture, while the dam ensures a minimum amount of water in the course of the river near Stříbro. In 1996, a hydroelectric power station with two Kaplan turbines was built.
