Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian had the castle built in 1347 to repel raids from Bohemia. The castle was stormed and partly destroyed in 1498. In 1865 the so-called Schellenberg-Niggl, the last inhabitant of the castle grounds, left the Schellenberg. Today the castle ruins, which are located at 826 meters, are the highest vantage point in the Upper Palatinate.
