The Amalien fountain was built in 1912 by Dr. Fritz Hirsch designed and decorated by the medalist Heinrich Ehehalt. The fountain stock is decorated with two oval medallions showing a half-length portrait of the Margravine and various coats of arms. The Baden and Hessian coats of arms refer to Amalie herself - she was a Hessian-Darmstadt princess who was married to the Hereditary Prince of Baden, Carl-Ludwig, until 1801. Because of its ten snails spouting water on the edge of the pool, the fountain is popularly known as the "snail fountain".

Amalie (1754–1832) was the widow of the Baden Crown Prince Karl Ludwig. After her son Karl married Napoleon's adopted daughter Stéphanie de Beauharnais in 1806, she lost her rank as the first woman at the Baden court and moved to Bruchsal. The castle served as her widow's residence until her death. She became known as the "mother-in-law of Europe": five of her daughters married important princes - including the kings of Bavaria and Sweden and the Tsar of Russia. The Amalienbrunnen fountain, erected in front of the chancellery building in 1912, commemorates her.

Funny, the snails that are positioned around the fountain feed the fountain with their feelers.
