This story sounds almost cute from today's point of view. In 1857, the first attempt was made to lay a cable through the Atlantic that was to be used for communication. It took five attempts until it succeeded without letting the cable tear while rolling out. And it worked! In fact, a message could be sent. Until the cable burnt through three weeks later.

Years later a new attempt was started, which worked out almost without any problems. The new cable was soon used commercially: If you wanted to send a message, you only had to pay one dollar per letter. At that time, the average worker earned about 20 dollars a month.
